Singlish

The agent just called to remind me of two points to note for my interview.
1) No need to arrive earlier than the arranged time.
2) Try not to speak Singish during the interview as the boss is not local and wants someone who can portray a professional image.

Now, after hearing point 2, I got somewhat offended. A little. I was trying to recall if I had spoken any singlish when I met the agent. No I didn't recall. And I think I wouldn't speak Singlish during an interview would I? I asked my mum if I spoke Singlish and she says sometimes, coz we might be too used to it that we didn't realize it unless it is those hokkien terms. So I did a quick search on the internet and oh my... there is even a Coxford Singlish Dictionary haha!!! But I think to get a foreigner to understand Singlish just by refering to this dictionary is not enough coz some terms are not easy to explain and when used in different context it will give rise to different meaning.

I bet you didn't know the word 'cheaterbug', and 'switch off' is a Singlish term do you? See. This is what I meant by speaking Singlish unknowningly. Cheaterbug seem to be a perfectly normal english word. And this dictionary confirmed my uneasiness over the used of the term 'chio' and 'chio bu'. All the while I mean both terms refers to pretty girls but somehow I think it is quite a degrading term to use on girls because of the way it sounded. The Coxford Singlish Dictionary states that 'chio' is an impolite way of describing a pretty lady and 'chio bu' is a somewhat rude term. And I totally agree. So now you know the reason if I were to give you the evil look the next time you use this term. lolz
Yandao on the other hand sounds ok, it is just a term to describe someone who is handsome.

So I guess I better watch what spews out of my mouth during the interview.
