CNY - Going through the motion?

First day of CNY. As per usual, visited the same people, say the same thing, eat the same thing, hear the same thing. Without fail every year my mum will scream at everyone early in the morning to wake up and get ready to go visiting. Then without fail my mum will be the last to be ready and my dad will say something to provoke my mum and then all of us will get our ear drums blasted for the entire car journey to the first stop, Teban Gardens.

Everything has become so predictable. I am wondering are we really celebrating CNY because we wanted to or because of habit? Do we understand the meaning behind the things we do? For myself I think it is more of going through the motions. I don't really know those relatives of mine except my direct cousins. We cousins are not even close not to mention those more distant relatives. I see no point in visiting them but just tag along with my parents year after year. What is the point of visiting your relatives every CNY when you don't even visit or call them during the rest of the year??

I can forsee next time when all the older relatives have pass on, there will no longer be a bond in the younger generation. I can see that I'll more likely visit my parents next time and that's about it. Coz I'm the eldest grandchild so by right my cousins should visit me first before I visit them. I think most of us will end up visiting friends.

Speaking of that, I will go to Ms Cheng's house every year but I decided not to do so this year coz her dog and I are mutually exclusive!! Her dog simply love me so much that he wil rush to greet me and chase me around the house EVERY TIME I visit. When it is not CNY, at least I can make my escape by jumping onto the chair and even table (of coz the parents are not around la) and the dog will look at me from below. But last year during CNY, her house was so packed and I can't possibly jump onto the table, I simple had to hop aound and cling onto the Ms Cheng and her sister. But both evils keep laughing and don't save me..even encourage the dog to come find me. Sorry dog, I know you very cute but I still very scared. Ms Cheng's father even ask her if I am going tmr and she told him I'm scared of his beloved 'son' (the dog). HAA!! Sorry Uncle Seng!
