Sometimes dreams can become a reality if you dream hard enough and have enough determination to see it through. Back in secondary school, I used to dream about not dragging around tonnes of thick and heavy textbooks. If only all books are in the form of diskettes (last time diskette is very big deal ok!) and for each subject it can be a few diskettes then every student will have a computer in class and ta-dah..no need for heavy bags!! Of course I was just dreaming to myself la.. but it really became a reality now and in much more advance technology than my diskettes and computer.
Not long ago in a pilot program, some students made use of PC tablet as part of their learning curriculum and now it is reported in the newspaper that the govt in its 2015 Intelligent Nation plan will build 'schools of the future' where teaching and learning will be done in the form of PC tablets, digitised textbooks, interactive white boards and even virtual reality laboratories. Wow.. kids of the future really have so much more. Looking back it is only like 10 years and so much things have changed! Of course the change we experienced is not as drastic as our parent's kampong-to-city kind of change but the rapid advancement of technology is really fast and albeit scary at times.
And not forgetting how reliant we are of technology and the internet these days. The recent Taiwan earthquake is a very good example. It damaged 6 major underwater network cables if I'm not wrong and affected quite a number of coutries in Asia. Over here the damange is not as bad as in elsewhere as we only experienced a much slower connection but that is enough to send us, the supposedly technology savvy and may I add technology-dependent, into a flurry and much frustration. I was in the school library when it happened and of course I didn't know about this news yet. I was trying to access google but the connection was like taking donkey years and finally it show me a "gateway not found" page. After mutiple attempts of refreshing and banging of keyboard (oops!) I gave up. I still thought the problem was me. I thought I didn't know how to use the newer version of explorer that the library has upgraded to. The interface is more like firefox. So in the end it was me, but the earthquake. I would be damn pissed if I had some important work to do at that time... This is how reliant we are on the internet and of course how impatient I am. haa..
Disgressing abit, I am looking forward to new year's eve. Normally I don't celebrate festive season at all except for CNY... but this year we're gg to Ms Tan's hse to have steamboat dinner!!! Yummy Yummmy... and Ms Bong will be back!!! Can't wait to see her.. but BUT we'll have to make sure she wakes up in time to eat for you know how pig she can be and with the jet lag + time difference.. oh gosh.. i forsee a erm.. 'challenging' task ahead.
