1) When in the lift, do you wait for the door to close automatically or do you always push the close button?
Well, for me I will always push the button for it to close. The other morning my supervisor and I happen to take the same lift to work and after other people exited the lift at other levels, leaving just both of us, I walked forward to push the close button. Then my supervisor asked "Why must you push the close button? Are you in a rush of time?"
I was quite puzzled as to why he asked so I just asked if I should just stand and stare at the door while waiting for it to close automatically and he said yes. He said that in our fast-paced society we should learn to make use of the few seconds of riding the lift to just relax. The few seconds that the lift door takes to close automatically will not make any difference. So what do you think of his reason?
2) Do you hold those swinging door for others behind you?
This qn is posted by one of my collegue. I will hold the door for you if you are behind me... at least I will push and wait for the person behind me to come push the door as well....so that it will not slam in the person's face. My collegue observed that many Singaporean do not hold the door for others... the best that we do is what I did...which is what majority of us will do.
However she shared that when she was studying overseas, it is a culture to hold the door for others, not only just keeping it open but rather they will hold the door for you with a smile. They will do it even if you are like 1m away... as long as they see someone at a distance, the person will hold and smile. Of course the other person will return the courtesy with a smile and a word of hello. Guys will hold for ladies, ladies will hold for guys... everyone does it for everyone else.. not matter what age/gender. Now that is courtesy.
I never used to notice anything wrong with the way we '
hold' the door until now. As my collegue puts it, if you did not see another side of how things are done in other places, you will not find anything wrong with the way we do things. Now I am more observant when I come to any swinging door coz people really just let it slam in my face even if I am just 2 steps away.
3) Do you rush into the lift when the door opens?
A female collegue posted this an to a male collegue coz they happen to take the same lift the other day and she observed that once the door open, he went in even though there are like alot of ladies wanting to get in too. His reason was that since he is nearest to the lift door he should just go on and not block the way of others behind him. Nothing wrong right? That's what I thought so too.
But BUT in England, guys usually will not stand near to the lift door even if there is no one waiting for the lift when he arrived. He will stand back and let other stand infront. When the lift arrive, the guys will let the ladies enter first before they enter. Among ladies they will also not rush in like the typical Singaporean fashion, they will also let each other go in first. This is courtesy. Usually the guys will not be able to take the first lift esp in the peak hours in the morning but they do not mind.
I think I'll observe the office crowd tmr and see if its true that guys will rush in or are there some gentlemen around. Usually the 'ang mohs' in office are very nice people.
I think what I got most out of this job is not about what they deal with but rather is all the things I hear from working people coz these things can benefit you no matter what job you are in next time. It is very interesting what these people have to share. And I learnt 1 thing... and that is to people watch... to observe people.
I was observing a few secondary school girls in the train while on the way home and from them I start to think back to those days. I really wondered why are secondary sch
'kids' always so messy and sloppy? I mean we will all have hair tied/pin up and there will always be the stray hair here and there. Then there is the extra long skirt and big blouse and big bag plus plastic bag etc etc. Ms Cheng, why do we think we look very nice in our hairstyle back then? Looking at these
kids reminded me of ourselves back then... we thought we look nice but those adults looking at us must be fainting...haha.. this is interesting isn't it. Everyone will go through this stage. =)
