Updates on the field visit that I had last week. I went onboard a barge!! Not many people will have a chance coz this is like not a cruise ship?! So cannot anyhow go and see see.. Anyway I had to put on the protective overalls, safety shoes, helmet, goggles and gloves. Yes I was wrap from head to toe! I was sweating like mad. And there is really nothing nice to see on board la.. not a cruise ship mah. But at least I get a better idea of the structures onboard and some of the work procedures..and I had a go at trying one of them. Its really a mundane job onboard. Everyone specialize in an area of work and can get boring after awhile (at least to me) but then it is also because of this specialization that they develope expertise in that area so as to be able to deal with any conditions out at sea.

I heard from a Master that when he was sailing in the past, he was out at sea for 6 months before having 2 months of solid leave!

The other day I was waiting for the mrt to arrive as usual to get me to work then I saw something which I was disgusted. As everyone know, there are the so-called security guards at every mrt station now to check the bags of suspicious characters right... but very often they are so old I think they will be the first to run if anything happens much less stop the suspicious character.. but that aside, guess what! This security guard was patrolling the platform and checking the nooks and cranny, such as the space for putting fire extinguisher, to ensure nothing suspicious is planted in it. The guard opened one such space and put his hands in.. and he took out some sweet wrappers which I assume some inconsiderate ppl have conveniently put inside coz mrt stations no longer have dustbins. So what did he do? He took out those rubbish and threw it on the ground!!!! For what!? For the cleaner to sweep I suppose! I mean yes it is not your job as a guard to clear rubbish but since u already holding it in your hands can't u just bring it down and throw?? What if tourist saw these rubbish?? If you don't want to throw it, I rather those rubbish be left inside the space..at least no one will see if you don't peer into the empty space. I think SMRT needs to educate their security guards on this too. Or are they too specialized in their area of work that they cannot throw away these small bits of rubbish?
