Over lunch yesterday, my collegues were commenting that Singaporeans generally are overworked. We work so hard for the family yet have little time to spend with the family. That's the irony. Yes we are known for being efficient and hardworking but that usually is done at the expense of family time. Many people will get into office earlier than required and usually stay past the knock-off time. Office hours for many are either 8.30am-5.30pm or 9am - 6pm. So the earliest we get home is say est 1hr later. So its around 7pm.
By this time the sky would have turn dark and is time for dinner. So after dinner, children will do their homework while the adults will continue their office work or housework. In today's society, usually both parents are working so houswork usually are done in the evenings. Soon it will be time for bed. And the rountine repeats itself the next day.
But in Australia, States and many western countries, parents will get off work and be home say around 5-6pm so that they can go for a stroll in the park before dinner. Sounds good doesn't it? Not to mention we don't have those wonderful parks here. At least time are spent together. But then again, it is the different lifestyle. Can we live a much more carefree life and yet maintain our edge of competitiveness? That'll have to depend on the individual I guess.
Oh ya, University of Society is one without books and exams. It has no standard cirriculum to follow and it is one which everyone will have to figure out how to survive. Having worked in different environment and different size of companies has indeed opened my eyes to somethings which cannot be found in the school environment, maybe not so prominent. This explains why the office environment is always so 'cool'. You never know if someone meant what they say, neither will you be able to really know what they are thinking. Its a complicated theory.
